TERM 2 LEARNING CORNER MATERIALS 

FEEDBACK

Learning corners materials have a clear objective and idea of the theme chosen. It is able to attract more people in joining the field as a mother tongue teacher as the materials are provided which lessen the workload as an Educator.

 

Pros:

  • Allow children to improve on their Mother Tongue

  • Able to help when the centre does not have enough Chinese Teachers

 

Cons:

  • Materials must be age appropriate

  • Provide more interesting and hands-on activities, such as using of sensorial materials like flour or rice

  • Short-term solutions

The ideas of the learning corners materials sounds good and it can be used as a form to encourage mid-career switch to teach Mother Tongue as there are lesser workload. As these materials are provided, there will be lesser workload, stress and preparation time on it.

 

Pros:

  • Applicable for now

  • Help to lessen the effects of the needs

  • Help with the current workload of the teachers

 

Cons:

  • Need to be age appropriate

  • Need to introduce the materials to the children first

  • Need to consider the materials plan is suitable for the centre: e.g. flash cards are not applicable in the centre

 

Suggestions given:

  • Pictorial task cards instead so that children will be able to understand even if they are unable to read

  • Term 1 Materials: Using of different writing medium for each age group (play-dough for N2, rice or salt for K1, materials that are available in the centre for K2) and age appropriate games (Bingo for K1, Board game for K2)

  • Term 2 Materials: Matching of words with words for N2 and K1, matching of words with pictures for K2

  • Alternative materials to expose children to Mother Tongue at a young age through the use of puppets or pictures cards and get children to role play in Chinese
